This was an old village called “Casas por trás do ilhéu” (Houses behind the islet) that were abandoned in 1940. The village called “Casas por trás do ilhéu” had been abandoned since 1940. It was composed of 8 houses and a couple of agricultural buildings belonging to three families. It housed more than 20 people, dedicated to farming and fishing. Around 10 years ago architect Carlos Sousa Dias undertook the task of gathering information about the abandoned village, finding long gone owners and designing a vision for the future Casas de Incensos. It was long, painstaking work that took about five years.
The village is as authentic as it could be: the building sizes, heights and style were integrally maintained. Only the details and interiors denounce a modern rebuild. The nature around it has been respected and integrated into the project, namely the “Incensos” (Pittosporum undulatum), one of the most common trees on the property and a permanent presence in the landscape. The use of modern materials has been carefully disguised and, at first glance, you’ll be in an XVIth century Azorean village.
Pontas Negras sits in the parish of Ribeiras, Municipality of Lajes do Pico. The first settlers to this area arrived in the XVth century, to become farmers and fishers. Whaling was also one of the common activities in this area in later times, until the 20th century.
This is much more than an interesting property or a good business opportunity: it’s a piece of Azorean heritage and nature.
